This newsletter aims to provide the latest information on irrigation controller research at the University of Florida. Research includes: general irrigation efficiency, technology-based irrigation control of landscapes, and technology-based drip irrigation control on vegetables. This course is the first in a series of eight courses that provide a body of knowledge on current water conservation topics and initiatives in the state of Florida. This introductory course is designed for individuals who would like to enhance their current skill sets of water conservation or for new or emerging individuals in the water conservation industry. May 5-6 Gainesville. July 14-15 Orlando.
FRWA Annual Conference to be held at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfreont Resort on August 11-13, 2008. The room rates start at $109.00. To take advantage of the discounted rate you must make your reservations by July 28, 2008. The Century Commission will hold a Water Summit on September 30 and October 1, 2008. The Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida is to envision the future of Florida. Their task is to help Florida's citizens and state leaders prepare for a continued increase in population and to craft a plan that meets the challenges and opportunities this presents. The American Water Resources Associations 44th Water Resources Annual Conference will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2008. Dixieland Jazz, Cajun and Creole food, parades and beads, the French Quarter all served up with a touch of voodoo, combine to make New Orleans a most exciting venue for a Conference. While some of the surrounding areas are still working hard on the Katrina recovery effort, downtown New Orleans and the famous French Quarter are alive and well, setting record attendance numbers at many events.

This is the eighteenth year that the Florida Rural Water Association (FRWA) has presented the Focus on Change Seminar in conjunction with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). California Irrigation Institute (CII) is having their 47th Annual Conference February 3-4, 2009 at the Embassy Suites, Riverfront Promenade in Sacramento. Thousands of children and their families are expected to visit Jacksonville's Museum of Science and History (MOSH) on Saturday, Feb. 7, for the 10th annual Water Education Festival. The festival will fill MOSH with dozens of interactive displays and activities, designed to teach the importance of Florida's water and natural resources in ways to appeal to children. This conference focuses on "Watershed-Foodshed" and features Maude Barlow and Wes Jackson as the two keynote speakers. Other speakers include Oxford Universitys Andrew Parker, Toby Hemenway, Paul Stamets, Judith Phillips, David Gutzler, Brad Lancaster, Deborah Madison and others. The St. Johns River Water Management District's Governing Board will hold a workshop on March 8 to discuss concepts to improve public supply water conservation by making changes to agency rules. This meeting is the third Board workshop on proposed changes to District consumptive use permitting and environmental resource permitting rules to enhance water conservation. At the March 8 workshop, discussion will continue on the nine water conservation concepts previously proposed by District staff. Staff will provide an update and propose a schedule for the rulemaking process. source: AWWA THE WATER CRISIS Florida is at a water crossroads. The states three largest urban-economic regions: Tampa Bay, southeast Florida and the greater Orlando area have effectively run out of available groundwater. The three largest water management districts have determined that increased pumping in these regions will result in unacceptable environmental impacts, such as drawdowns of wetlands and lakes; reduced flows to springs and rivers; and increased risk of saltwater contamination into fresh groundwater resources.
